Project: Mulching Garden Beds

Gardening | Beginner

Few tasks offer instant gratification in the garden. Mulching is a happy exception. Nothing quite dresses up your plantings and your lawn areas like freshly mulched garden beds. In addition to looking good, proper mulching prevents weed growth and promotes healthy plants.

Step 1: PREPARE THE BEDS

Remove weeds and grass from your beds, trim plants and edge as needed. Use a bow rake to clear the debris and level the soil before mulching.

Step 2: TRANSFER MULCH

Bagged mulch can be dumped directly into beds, while bulk mulch can be transferred to a cart using a bedding fork. A bedding fork cuts into the mulch more easily than a shovel and is lightweight, making it much easier on your arms and back. The bedding fork is also good for working mulch under plants and in other areas where dumping is impractical.

Step 3: SPREAD THE MULCH

Spread the mulch through the bed with your bow rake to create a layer 2-3 inches deep, making it thicker where you want to discourage new growth. Don’t mulch heavily under the drip areas of plants, as this can prevent water from reaching the roots. Level and tamp the mulch with your bow rake. This is a high-satisfaction task that’s great for kids.

Step 4: ENJOY THE VIEW

Take time to enjoy your newly manicured grounds!
